Delta 8 Flower vs. CBD Flower

Updated September 23rd, 2020

There’s no doubt that CBD is everywhere, with the industry increasing in value every quarter as more people become acquainted with what cannabinoids are capable of.  With CBD’s massive popularity becoming a general increased interest in cannabis overall, this has led to many innovative companies finding new ways to experience this fascinating plant genus. One product that’s been getting a lot of attention lately is Delta 8.  But this product is without a doubt far less understood than CBD, which is why today we’ll be comparing the two in flower form.

What is Flower?

For those who don’t know, flower refers to the flowering buds of the cannabis plant – the female cannabis plant, to be exact, as only the female of the species produces the compounds that we consider to be desirable.  Both the hemp plant and the marijuana plant, which both belong to the cannabis genus, produce these compound-rich flowers which are utilized for various purposes.

When we buy flower, we receive dried buds that either come loose or come rolled up in paper.  Flower is most often smoked, but it can also be vaporized with a specialized device, or even cooked with.

So, what does flower have over other types of cannabis products made with cannabis extracts?  Well, for one thing, it’s the purest, rawest form of cannabis there is, which means that it has not been chemically altered in any way.  Some feel that this creates a more bioavailable product, as certain extraction, purification and refinement methods can interfere with the general effectiveness.  Further, flower products allow us to choose from a wider range of strains as they occur in nature.

Keep in mind that any flower product will contain more than just the dominant cannabinoid of the plant.  Within the flower is the full array of cannabinoids, flavonoids, terpenes and other compounds present in the chemical composition.

Delta 8 Flower

Now, let’s talk about Delta-8 flower.  To do that, we have to explain what this compound is.  Delta8 is a minor cannabinoid present in cannabis.  Delta9 THC is the psychoactive compound in cannabis, which is fairly high in marijuana and very, very low in hemp.  It’s the reason why one plant is illegal while one is not.  Delta 8 is far less naturally abundant than

delta9, but it’s still THC.

The way in which these two psychoactive compounds differ seems to be the high that they produce.  Delta-8 seems to be a bit less psychoactive, and produces a calmer high than its big sister, delta-9.  And, it may offer properties that deal with mood, discomfort and gut function.

But, in nature, there is no such thing as delta-8 flower.  That’s because this compound is so minor that you can’t find a flower product that contains enough of this cannabinoid to be delta 8-dominant.  So, how is it made?

Well, it’s made artificially.  Chemists isolate and extract this cannabinoid, then infuse standard flower with the extract.

CBD Flower

Then, we have CBD flower, which is also known as hemp flower.  This is simply the naturally occurring flower buds from the hemp plant, which is naturally dominated by CBD (cannabidiol).  Basically, this product is as close to nature as it gets when it comes to hemp.  It comes in a vast array of strains, is highly versatile and provides you with the full chemical composition for which hemp is known, including, besides CBD, other desirable cannabinoids like CBN, CBG and CBC, plus an abundance of terpenes and other compounds.

Which One is Better?

So, is one better than the other?  Ultimately, this is a subjective matter, but allow us to share what we can about how they differ.

The main difference that’s important to keep in mind is that of the two options, only hemp flower is federally legal.  Delta-8 is a form of THC that’s psychoactive.  When you take a drug test, it will come up as THC, and cause you to fail.  And, if it’s confiscated and analyzed by law enforcement, it will read as THC.  So, why is it sold in stores?  Well, because of a legal loophole.  Delta9 is regulated, unlike this little sister compound.  Therefore, on its own, it’s not considered a classified substance.  However, it will still get you into trouble should you take it in a state in which marijuana has not been legalized for recreational purposes.

Further, the means for extracting this THC compound is questionable.  Because it’s so minorly occurring in nature, methods need to be used which may risk a high level of undesirable impurities, not to mention chemical instability.

Ultimately, hemp flower is the more trustworthy and reputable option of the two.  You know exactly what you’re going to get, and it’s legal in all 50 states.
