Applications of CBD in Medicine – Potential Cancer Cure
The medicinal properties of cannabis plant have long been part of common knowledge among medical fraternity and it has been used for therapeutic treatment of patients with neurological problems and those in deep pain due to its ability to calm them down. There are several online articles and medical studies about cancer curing powers of cannabis which are not substantiated with hard evidence. Though the possession and cultivation of cannabis which is also called as marijuana is illegal in United States, some states have legalized the use of cannabis for medical purposes.
CBD or cannabidiol that is found abundantly in the cannabis plant is used for making formulation of medical compounds and topical creams for use in rheumatoid arthritis, nausea, bowel problems, diabetes and also side effects of multiple sclerosis and anxiety related disorders. A recent report published in International Journal of Neurophamacology states that CBD affects neurogenesis in the hippocampus section of the brain causing the body to relax.
US FDA regulation about cannabis
The usage of cannabis extracts for cancer treatment or any other illnesses is not approved by FDA so it is generally sold as dietary supplements or health foods with cannabinoids. These have the ability to activate positive receptors in the central nervous system and immune system. Some cannabinoids that are available commercially like dronabinol and nabilone have been approved by FDA for treating side effects of cancer.
How cannabidiol treats symptoms
The sedative effect of cannabis is due to CBD while the hyperactive or “high” effect is due to THC and both are cannabidiols that naturally exist in cannabis or hemp plant. Experiments conducted on epilepsy patients have also shown positive results in 75 percent of patients. When CBD was tested for rheumatoid arthritis scientists found that it reduced inflammation by 50 percent and also assisted in reducing size of infract after a heart attack.
CBD is cuts down symptoms of anxiety and paranoia that usually effects patients prescribed with medical marijuana. So CBD is appealing to aged patients that are not comfortable with THC as it has calming and sedative effect. Interest in anti-epileptic properties of CBD was aroused by a recent case in which a child suffering from Dravet’s syndrome was cured to a large extent after treatment with extracts of CBD. Stanford researches have also confirmed that a recent experiment on 19 children suffering from severe epileptic attacks showed that 84 percent experienced reduction in seizures after taking CBD in prescribed doses.
Research and studies about CBD as an anticancer drug
Though extracts of marijuana were given to cancer patients to dull their consciousness and bear excessive pain related to their disease in some healthcare centers, it was not openly prescribed by doctors. The first scientific evidence of anti-cancer properties of CBD was produced by Dr. Sean McAllister of Pacific Medical Center after decade long research for new therapeutic drugs for cancer. His research revealed that CBD has the property of inhibiting proliferation of cancer cells by controlling metastasis and tumor growth.
His experiments on breast cancer cells showed that application of CBD strains reduced cancer cells by a large percentage. This is chiefly because CBD have the ability to switch off cancer genes and providing a toxin free therapy for cancer treatment. Though several studies have been reported about curative power of CBD with reference to different types of cancers like glioma, lung cancer, leukemia and breast cancer, clinical tests on actual humans have not been done making it difficult for government agencies to certify its use as anti-cancer drug.Studies carried out to test cancer curative powers of different strains of cannabis plant have been done on lab mice and lab cells
Effect of CBD on treatment of Glioma
The effect of a powerful strain of anti cancer cannabidiol has been tried out on patient suffering from glioma which is a form of neurological tumor. The details of this study were published in British Journal of Cancer based on studies conducted in Spain to determine ability of Tetrahydrocannabinol to treat cancer. The THC concentrate was combined with saline solution and albumin which was injected with a syringe into the brain cavity after removal of tumor to kill of any remaining tumor cells.
Results of this study found that tumor cells decreased in two out of the nine patients on whom it was carried out. As brain tumors are highly resistant to all kinds of anti cancer treatments, the powers of THC and CBD cannot be denied as they also have powers to reduce Glioblastomamultiforme.
Effect of CBD on treatment of breast cancer
Besides the study at California Pacific Medical Center which published details about cancer cell inhibiting powers of CBD and its ability to reduce mass of tumor, experiments were carried out even with pure THC extracts on breast cancer patients. A report was also published in Journal of Molecular Cancer which discussed details about how THC reduced proliferation of tumor cells in the body and inhibited breast cancer in mice during clinical experiments in labs.
Effect of CBD on treatment of lung cancer
For treatment of lung cancers all treatments involved use of highly purified CBD or THC which inhibits growth of cancer cells and decreases invasiveness of these cells on the body. These purified cannabinoid receptors have produced reasonably antitumor effects in clinical tests and have raised expectations of people in these compounds. But these experiments are still in clinical stage and it remains to be seen if lung cancer can really be cured by pure extracts of CBD or THC derived from cannabis plant.
The anticancer properties of both purified THC and CBD are enhanced chiefly due to their ability to trigger cancer cell death through a process called apoptosis. They also prevent cancer cells from spreading into other parts of the body and destroying neighboring tissue. Though some research reports have stated positive effects of CBD in the treatment of cancer, some studies have shown that it can also stimulate cancer cell growth and lead to progression of tumor.
